The Ultimate Guide to Becoming a Podcaster

The Ultimate Guide to Becoming a PodcasterWhat a thrill this was. I had been writing podcasting articles for NMX (Blogworld.com) and in 2012 I received an email from one of their representatives asking me if I'd consider writing a full-blown guide to podcasting. I was absolutely interested because this would be a proper publishing opportunity: I would get paid directly for the work rather than solely receive a cut of individual sales (a good thing, since the book is free to download). There's security in knowing that you'll get paid when you turn in the final manuscript, and the writing and editing went very, very well.

The Big Book of Spam

My attempt at comedy.

I still think it was a great idea, and I'm still… okay, sort-of happy with the way the book turned out, but for a variety of reasons I did not give it a chance to catch on. It soured me on the idea of self-publishing, that act of releasing a book and crossing your fingers that you'll get paid for your work. After just a couple of months with no sales, I pulled the plug on both it and the website that I had built to support it.

It lives on as an Amazon listing, proof that at one point in the past, I thought email spam could be funny.

Success With Cafepress.com

Success With Cafepress.comIt's been many years since I've even thought of this book, much less talked about it. I had spent about two years as a Cafepress “shopkeeper”, a designer and seller of custom designs set on t-shirts, hats, mugs and the rest of the products Cafepress offered. During that time, I sold a fair number of items and became quite knowledgable about the company and its workings. In 2005, I was offered a community moderator position in their support forums, and I accepted. I also created a three-part online tutorial for new shopkeepers. In the forums one day, a shopkeeper said “someone should write a book about all this!” – so, I would. I pitched the idea to Cafepress, they liked it, I wrote the book, and they printed and fulfilled orders for it. As I write this in 2013, it is long out of print and very obsolete, sadly.
